1.Comprehension — > Understand what is going on in the surface level !

Do you understand all of the words in the text? !
References, historical events. Asking questions about genre. !
2.Observation —> !
Rhymes? If stands have same number of lines? Pattern in rhyme? Syllables? Diction. Create
tone with the word choices you make. Sense of irony in ”Tone”. !

3.Analysis—> Which of the observations are significant to the meaning of the poem. Based on
patterns that keep coming up. If there are images coming up. !
Theme: Central argument !
Tone is the subject of the poem. Tone is not the theme. What the poet is saying about the Tone
is the theme. !
Word choice is a central point of the tone of a text. Certain words have better respectability if
you’re trying to address to impress. Use certain words in formal contexts. !
You can play with it break rules and leave people by surprise in writing. !

In a sonnet there will be a certain number of lines, rhyme schemes, patterns and relationships
to determine the form. !
Literary form: The way the author has organized the aspect of the text. 4 stanzas. Line breaks.
Certain rhymehm to the poem. Made a choice to where to break the line. !
Q. How does the form, stanza arrangement, line length how does that relate to the content . !
Conventions: Rules - spoken and unspoken. Expectations from the text !
Rhetorical criticism: Rita Wongs poem!
Best suited for essays speeches sermons pamphlets religious text!

Formalist criticism: Spensers sonnet!
how does sound repetition and rhyme image theme tone is portrayed by the use of language !
New critics: History authors bg etc are not related to what the poem portrays need to
understand those to understand the text itself!
Meaning of text is separate from readers and their emotions!
