Document Summary

Meningitis: the inflammation and infection of the meninges. Meninges: the 3 protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Encephalitis: the general infection and inflammation of the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid: csf acts as a cushion for the brain, it flows between the meninges. Csf does not have many wbc and it is nutrient rich = perfect place for bacterial growth. Causes inflammation and increased intracranial pressure on the brain. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (dic): blood clotting proteins become overactive and can cut off normal blood supply to organs causing multi-system organ failure. When someone expels their mucous particles through a sneeze or cough. Droplets can travel 1 meter max then they fall to the ground (they"re heavy) It invades through the mucous membrane, it then diffuses into the blood which eventually reaches the blood brain barrier where the bacteria can sit causing inflammation of the cells in the blood brain barrier.
