Session 9 - innate immunity (nonspeci c host defences) Gures out what is foreign and what isn"t. Need to be able to differentiate between self and non-self (pathogens) Inability to do so leads to autoimmune diseases - body attache itself. Some lives in the deeper layer of the skin and causes no problems. Respiratory tract contains ciliated cells - laments that move in a wave and move microorganisms from the lungs to the throat. Tobacco damages the cilia : more bacteria and microorganism in lungs. Mucous ushes out organisms and prevents them from binding to the cell underneath. Crevicular uid - in teeth, prevents oral infection. Gastric juice - low ph, so organisms don"t grow there. Urine/vaginal secretions - ushing action, ph prevents growth. Normal ora - occupies binding sites on cells. Increase in wbc circulating, helps with the immune response. Ex. sore throat is because of swollen lymph nodes, because the wbc"s multiply in response to infection.
