Document Summary

Session 11 - adaptive / acquired system : speci c generated host defences. Takes a while to develop (week(s)) the rst time you meet the pathogen. Remembers its and is able to ght it off much faster next time. Antibody and memory cell production (second response, increases number of antibodies) B lymphocytes - humeral immunity - antibodies in blood. T lymphocytes - cell mediated system - kills infected cells. Produce antibodies (proteins) in response to a speci c antigen. Antigen presenting cells - activate other immune cells to ght infection. Thymus dependant (td) antigens : requires t helper cell contact (ex. protein) Thymus independent (ti) antigens : ex. bacteria cell wall components. Receptor on surface (bcr) is on igm (what contacts other cells and bind to structures) Divides into two types of memory cells based on chemical signals in the environment. Td antigen : requires t lymphocyte (t-helper cells) = memory cells and plasma cells.
