NUTR480 Lecture 6: Fueling Exercise with Fat
Document Summary
How is fat used in our bodies: energy substrate, essential element of cell membranes, fat soluble vitamins, pre-cursor to cholesterol and other lipid based hormones. Fat in addition to carbohydrates (remember, fat burns in the fire of carbs) is oxidized to provide atp to the muscles. When the cho runs out there will be no more oxidation of fat. Depending how intense and the duration of the activity will determine how much atp in synthesized. However, no matter how much atp is needed the oxidation of fat will stop when the carbohydrates run out. Fat fuels low intensity exercise (when vo2 max is less than 30%). When the activity gets more intense (vo2 max is higher than 70%) the main fuel switches to carbohydrates. This comes from the crossover concept: the fuel that will produce atp best under the conditions the body is facing will dominate. This will alter the source of the energy throughout activity.
