PSYCHO 104, LECTURE 9: BRAIN PROCESSES(04/02/19)
BRAIN PROCESSES
1. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation): Sends weak magnetic fields across
the cortical surface, leading to temporary (non-permanent) disruption of
electrical activity.
Advantage: Relatively safe way of simulating lesions
Disadvantage: effects are not long-lasting, not for epileptic samples
2. ERP (Event- Related Potentials): Records the weak electrical fields generated
by large scale neural ensembles that permeate out through the skull.
Advantage: incredibly precise temporal recording (milisecond)
Disadvantage: spatially diffuse, what does no ERP modulation mean?
3. PET (Positron Emission Topography): After ingestion of a radioactive tag
which attached itself to glucose, glucose uptake related to increased brain
activity
Advantage: allows for insights into functionality of brain regions
Disadvantage: poor spatial resolution, involve radioactive substances
4. MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Records BOLD signal on the principle
that oxygenated blood has different magnetic properties than deoxygenated
blood.
Advantage: used in revealing brain networks
Disadvantage: BOLD signal very slow, not sure what it really means
Cerebral Cortex
Part of the fore-brain, conscious function.
Frontal Lobe
o Information cordination
o Responsible for executive decisions
o Memory for current events
o Personality
Temporal lobe
o Connected with the first stages of processing auditory information
o Code sensory objects
Damage to areas can result in difficulty in verbal communication, aphasia can be
no-fluent
