We perceive what we get from a job situation (salary, raises, recognition, etc. ) in relation to what we put into it (effort, experience, education, creativity, etc. ) and then we compare our outcome-input ratio with that of relevant others. If we perceive that ratio to be equal to relevant others, a state of equity exists. If it is unequal, we experience equity tension. Motivation goes down (the will to correct this inequity). Employees might compare themselves with friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Four moderating variables are gender, length of tenure, level in the organization and amount of education or professionalism. Women are typically paid less than men in comparable jobs and have lower pay expectations than men for the same work. If women are to be paid equally to men in comparable jobs, the standard of comparison needs to include both sexes.
