Document Summary

The first two of the three lines of defense against pathogens. Internal chemical & cellular barriers (2nd line) Don"t discriminate between one microbe and another. Second exposure to same microbe is no better or worse than first. Specific, adaptive) immunity (the third line of defense) Discrimination - able to distinguish foreign from self molecules and differentiate between two very similar foreign molecules. Diversity - able to recognize all possible foreign molecules. Memory - able to remember a foreign molecule if exposed to it before. Acquired immunity has two components: i) humoral immunity. Production of antibodies by b-cells (lymphocytes made in the bone marrow) in response to antigens ii) cell-mediated immunity. Activation of t-cells (lymphocytes which develop in the thymus) for the control of intracellular microbes (viruses, some bacteria, some parasites) i) humoral immunity. Antigen - any substance that stimulates b-cells to make antibodies.
