BIOL350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Ecosystem Ecology, International Standard Book Number, Presentation Of A Group
Document Summary
Course outline: biol 350 ecosystem ecology fall 2015. An ecosystem is defined as an integrated system of interacting biotic and abiotic components that occupy a volume of space. This definition is broad, and ecosystems can range from a drop of water (with its interacting chemicals and microbes) to entire lakes, forests, oceans, etc. Ecosystem science focuses on energy flow and nutrient cycling in ecosystems. Consequently, society needs well trained people with skills in ecosystem science to effectively protect and manage ecosystems in the face of ever-growing pressures. This course centers on ecosystem ecology, and consists of two lectures each week plus six tutorial sessions that students attend every other week at their appointed times. Lectures, supplemented with readings, will cover the fundamental principles of ecosystem science. Both theoretical and applied aspects of ecosystem ecology will be discussed. The tutorials and assignments will provide experiential learning of relevant field skills, integration of concepts, and critical analysis and communication skills.
