Somatic effort investment in own growth, development, differentiation, maintenance; up until puberty and then efforts get moved into reproduction (mating) Reproductive effort how much effort can be transferred from somatic: mating effort invest exclusively into mating and then switch over; Men do more: parenting effort invest into raising offspring; women do more. 3 stages: germinal stage (first 2 weeks): Placenta forms (make sure implantation occurs in uterus because if elsewhere, immediate abortion is recommended) Migration along fallopian tube; implantation in uterine wall. 20% of pregnancies fail: embryonic stage (2 weeks 2 months): Risk of miscarriage and birth defects is high: fetal stage (2 months birth): Organs begin to function; sex organs develop. Age of viability: 22 26 weeks. Born a year early and then continues to develop for another year so that it can grow* Childhood - hyperactivity, retarded mental & motor development.
