Possible earliest fossils 280 kya - 200 kya. Most common fossil = population based studies. Only after the discovery in neander valley, germany, neandertal was named. Less robust, probably due to warmer climate before glaciation. Neandertal - 1600cc, larger than homo sapiens. Larger brain was an adaptation to colder climate - possibility. Neandertals were more sensitive to changes in altitude (possibly) Taurodontism - expansion of the pulp chamber in molars, meaning the roots of the molars are less distinct from one another when compared to humans, fused together and detached a little bit at the ends. Shovel shaped incisors - similar to h. erectus. Severe wear of anterior teeth - very prevalent with people who use their teeth as tools. The birth canal is the same size comparatively. At least 40 or older, male, 1620 cc. Nicknamed the old man bc many diseases associated with the bone, trauma as well. Neandertals were identical to modern humans other than the skull.
