Document Summary

When calculating probabilities, you have to multiply together all the events that would have to happen in order to have a specific outcome. Calculating the probability that ? (iii-1) would be affected requires that you multiply. Iii-1 would have to get a disease allele from both parents. The chance that the father donates a disease allele is 1 (because he has to be homozygous for the disease allele). In order for the iii-1 to get a disease allele from the mother, that mother ii-3 has to be a carrier and pass on the disease allele. Her parents i-1 and i-2 have to both be carriers because they have an affected daughter ii-2. The chance then that ii-3 is a carrier is 2/3 just like the slide i showed you at the top. When there is more than one way that you could get a particular outcome, you add together all those different ways for your probability calculation.
