Document Summary

Management is getting the right things done through other people. Management thought started over 100 years ago and has evolved rather quickly ever since. Classical approaches: scientific management (frederic taylor): the systematic study of the relationships between people and tasks to redesign the work for higher efficiency. Its goal is to reduce the time a worker spends on each task by optimizing the way the task is done. For every job, develop a science that includes: rules of motion, standardized work implements and proper working conditions. Carefully select workers with the right abilities to perform the job. Train workers to do the job and give them proper incentives to cooperate with the job science. They didn"t allow workers to share in increased output. Managers often implemented only the increased output side of taylor"s plan. Management responded with increased use of machines. 1. 1 scientific management (frank and lilian gilbreth): they refined taylor"s methods, made many improvements to time and motion studies.
