The gathering of information to make a judgment about the processes and products of instruction. Data is neutral unless you can judge it. Traditional: use of devices to measure narrowly defined cognitive, affective, and psychomotor characteristics, somewhat isolated and formulaic. Performance: form of alternative assessment in which students demonstrate the same behaviour as the assessor desires. Performance assessments administered in real- life contexts: traditional methods what content has been covered in class, alternative method how should students express/ act out their learning. Ex: pe teacher wants to assess student mastery of fitt principle of exercise. The degree of consistency in purpose shown by an instructor across activity design, teaching processes, and assessment of student outcomes: activity selection should be driven by. Instructional processes should be intentionally chosen to meet objectives: assessment should provide valid evidence that student outcomes improved in relation to the stated objectives. Criteria are articulated in advance so that students know how they will be evaluated.
