Document Summary

Cilia involved with locomotion and cilia used for the pumping of water and pulling food out of the water. Paramecium creates a water current which will allow for the cilia for filtration of the nutrients; phagocytosis will allow for the consumption of food. Pinocytosis versus phagocytosis: pinocytosis is where nutrients absorbed is dissolved in solution. This organelle allows for the functioning of the cell. Micronucleus = creates haploid genome that will combine with another paramecium; strictly for meiosis. This organism has no cell wall of any type! Therefore, in an osmotic challenge the contractile vacuole (water expulsion vesicle) that is in the part of the endomembrane compartment, the cytoplasm is not diluted since the water will be pumped to the endomembrane system and swelling occurs. Once the swelling occurs, the water is then released and then ready to be filled again with the pumping. Osmoregulatory, circulatory, cytoskeletal and digestive systems are all occurring at the same time.
