CRM 2309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Doula, Prenatal Care, Postpartum Depression
Document Summary
Understanding context of criminalized women/women in prison: most women are incarcerated for non-violent offenses. Such as survival crimes, sex trade or being arrested for non-violent drug offenses such as possession. Quality programs aren"t being enforced either to help this: the provincial prisons are most transient, so people are always coming and going so that is primary why the programs are so poor. However, in federal they are slightly better because their prisoners in their that will be spending decades there. Which is challenging: stressful prison environment imagine being pregnant and going inside the institution, you"re not just worrying about you, but now about the unborn foetus. This isn"t illegal in canada, it"s a grey area, so its to the discretion of the warden. Its already hard to walk as it is when you"re pregnant, but with shackles its even more difficult, which raises our chances of say falling, which is extremely dangerous during pregnancy.
