CRM 2309 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Postpartum Depression, Doula, Prenatal Care
Document Summary
Over 80% of incarcerated women are in childbearing years. 6% of women are pregnant at time of arrest. Women coming in pregnant also have lots of other issues: abuse, substance dependency, mental illness, poor overall health, poor prenatal care, etc. Are usually in for non-violent offences (fraud, theft, etc. Within 24hrs of giving birth they have to give baby away (to family if lucky otherwise to social services) and go back to prison. Problems and complications after pregnancy not receiving proper medical care. Very big emotional problems post-partum depression. In jails, people are doing short sentences so are not fit to provide proper attention. Compared to federal prison where people live and die there. Is on remand and had not gone to trial and not found guilty yet. Started going into labor and was requesting to see nurse. Everyone thought she was faking it and symptoms were dismissed.
