Document Summary

English 1100: lecture vi: your argument: style and sense. Before the break, i presented you all with some tips for structuring your argument, beginning with the critical point that a good essay will be one that has a recognizable shape. You, and your reader, should be able to map your argument in terms of its simply having a discernable beginning, middle, and an end. If these things blur together you have a big problem! Such a blurring together can happen more easily than you think, however. In addition to having a clearly discernable intro, body, and conclusion to your essay, however, you want each of these parts to be both powerful and coherent in themselves. And meaningfully connected to each other and to the thesis that should govern the whole. Transitional words and phrases play an absolutely critical role in creating coherence within, and unity between, paragraphs.
