ENG 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Erms
Document Summary
Key point: every sentence of your essay should be consciously styled. Every sentence should be the product of deliberate rhetorical control. A consciously styled sentence will be: coherent, concise, and ideally, beautiful (or powerful) Writing that it is consciously styled will be: unified and coherent each sentence should grow out of, or extend the previous sentence. Good writing means thinking about the relation between our sentences. It will take the reader through the logical turns and shifts of the argument: to achieve this, we need to use transitional words and phrases which are used to signal readers where text is going. In other words, in addition, for example, as a result, and yet etc: use pointing words: words that point or refer backward to some concept in the previous sentence. Be careful though, vague pronoun reference is a very common error.
