ENG 1100 Lecture 1: Class 1 Note -Summaries etc
Document Summary
Author - authority - he who has power. When you encounter a piece of writing, you want to bring an intellectual curiosity. Strategic reading - picking things up (arguments, irony) One of the best ways to see a main argument is writing a summary (that starts with explaining the thesis) - this makes your understanding clear. Inserting quotations is not as effective as writing a summary in your own words. Skim / read - get an instinctive sense of what is going on. Write notes / highlight anything you nd interesting, important / make notes to yourself. Titles / capitalization or lack thereof can indicate author"s point of view / attitude to topic / biases. Can be manipulative - author wants you to agree with them, to in uence you. Introductory paragraph will give you a sense of where the writer is going. Check for an explicitly stated thesis, usually somewhere near beginning but not always.
