ENG 2110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Spile, Hollins University, Mark Twain
Document Summary
Illustrating the self: humour in the adventures of tom sawyer. Mark twain"s novel, the adventures of tom sawyer, is a classic novel enjoyed by many to date. It is a very light-hearted novel that completely embodies youth, humor, satire, and freedom. The world around tom seems to be a reflection of mark twain"s own life as a child, showing the pure and unrestrained feelings of an adolescent boy. Twain proves that his novel is unlike many before it, having a protagonist that seems a bit irrational and typical of a young boy. In fact, his novel tells a tale about a mischievous young boy who is constantly up to no good. He is the personification of the typical rowdy boy in classrooms that all elementary school teachers wish to not have. Tom is that boy who hates being forced to attend church, attend school, and being nagged by adults because it inhibits his freedom.
