ENGAmerican Lit- June 2, 2018
continuing with Cather- DOTAB- fragmentation that the world has already gone through- novel is trying
to deal with this breakage
question of miracle- appears very early on- Cather wants to pose this book as a solution to the problems
of the modern world
pg.31- hidden water- already we see a groping around for an answer- problem and solution being
proposed
description of the sunset by the narrator gives much insight- first page-first paragraph-
not interested in a synced time- but rather than a totality of time- time as is- not past present future etc.
hidden garden- obliviousness of the men to their surroundings
title is a misnomer- they are not in Rome
what is so important about gardens? what is Cather trying to say? - getting back to nature
Cather- needs to nature at the heart- hy does the adial’s gades stay hidde? hy do they ot
have access or potential like others in the novel- the adials do’t at hage
they do’t at ay kid of hage to the status uo
they do’t like the idea that thigs ae ak slidig- fewer people are staying true to the faith or even
joining
do’t ae hat the aties ae like- I read it in the book and that is what it must be like- happy in the
oblivious
Theme of course- NOTION of TENSION
what is the dividing line that Cather is interested in? why does it have to do with natures- what is the
dividing line
garden being paradise- like garden of Eden
aliven the spark of belief
remember the job of the bishop in the book- recovery
Cather says the world may have broken but not enough people are concerned about the breakage-
under 40- never experienced what broke
must be natural miracle- attainable goal
pg103-104- legend of balzahar- not a lazy man- made many travels in his youth- doesnt start out as a
