Document Summary

The history and origins of slavery to the 1830s. Myth: most 18th century emigrants were neither european nor free. The british colonies imported 1. 5 million slaves which was three times the number of free immigrants; only 1% of blacks living in the british colonies became free before the revolution. It hurt the population of africa as a whole; it created conflicts that led to wars and left the continent vulnerable to 19th century colonization: it benefited a number of empires like the british, dutch, and french. Different regions had different commodities where slaves were forced to work; west indies and sugar (this was one of the most brutal and violent locations and had the highest death rate), Chesapeake (virginia) and tobacco, and carolina and rice. The mainland colonies (the thirteen colonies) imported 250,000 slaves in the 18th century, but by 1780, the black population had almost doubled to 576,000.
