Document Summary

Built of: nucleic acid core (has geneic code), protein coat (protects core) Penetraion and uncoaing= enters cell, protein coat lost and nucleic acid released. Synthesis of neucleic acid and protein= neucleic acid redirects cell metabolism to produce virus. Assembly-maturaion= viral components assembled to form mature virus paricles. Release= new paricles are released by lysis of budding through membrane. May be detected in clinical specimens or immune reacion of paient can be detected. Found mainly in the respiratory tract and produce resp. tract disease. Produces haemaggluinin, nucleic acid made of separate but connected segments, subject to frequent recombinaion. Causes acute fecrile illness with variable resp. symptoms, young and old at risk. Vaccines usually combined against both types of inluenza, hampered by coninuous changes (not always efecive), some anivirals available. Frequent in infants and small kids, causes resp. disease. Major in children under 2yrs (causes bronchioliis and pneumonia)
