Document Summary

Viruses and virus infections: synthesis of nucleic acid and protein - the viral. Possess only one type of nucleic acid (dna or rna) Multiply by separate synthesis of nucleic acid and protein that are then assembled to form virus particles. Do not have own metabolism -> must grow within cells. Detection of viruses in the virus diagnostic laboratory: The golden rule is that viruses die out quickly in clinical specimens. They must be examined and inoculated in the laboratory within hours after collection. Use viral transport media and courier services, no room for postal services. Some protein coats (capsids) contain carbohydrates or lipids: visualization by (e. m. ), since viruses are invisible by light microscopy and very high magnification required. Viruses can be grown in: cell cultures, embryonated eggs, living animals. Only used for a few viruses which happen to be present in very large numbers in clinical specimens: effects after inoculation into cell cultures: this requires multiplication, i. e. , time.
