Why do we do what do, motivation directs and energizes behavior. Instincts theory: according to this theory, insitincts motivates human behavior, genetically determined to behave in a specific way when a certain stimulus is present. We have basic biological needs that must be satisfied, if they are not, tension will build in the person. Optimal arousal: must maintain a level of arousal in humans and animals, if too little, we get bored, if its too high, too much tension and stress. Hierarchy of motives: according to maslow, we have physiological and psychological needs, they motivate us to make sure our needs are satisfy, however some needs take precedence over others. Physiological must be satisfied first (sex, hunger, warmth) Self actualization our need to live with our true self. Self transcendence the need to find meaning and purpose outside of ourselves, the need to help others to self actualization. Empty stomach and hunger: what if you don"t have a stomach.
