Document Summary

Ribosomes are a complex structure of rna and protein that bond with mrna. The large subunit includes three binding sites for trnas. These sites are called the a (aminoacyl), the. Initiation factors recruit the small ribosomal subunit and trnamet (first trna) and scan the mrna for an aug codon. binds to a(cid:374)d (cid:271)egi(cid:374) at the 5" (cid:272)ap. When the complex reaches an aug, the large ribosomal subunit joins, the initiation factors are released, and a trna complementary to the next codon binds to the a site. A reaction transfers the met to the amino acid on the trna in the a site, forming a peptide bond. Both the rna and protein components of the large subunit are required for peptide bond formation between amino acids. Carboxyl group of the methionine is attached to the amino group of the valine. Methionine is transferred from the peptide site to the trna in the aminoacyl site.
