Document Summary

Bioa01 lecture 2: biology and the tree of life. Conditions that must be met for something to be alive": display order, the cell is the basic unit of life, cells have internal environments that are separate and distinct from their surroundings. E. g. flower- arranged in a highly ordered manner (with the cell being the fundamental unit of life: harness & utilize energy, maintaining processes and internal environments independent of the environment requires energy. E. g. transport of molecules across membranes against concentration gradients (acquire energy from environment and use it to maintain highly ordered state: reproduce, entities that reproduce are favored by natural selection over those that do not. All organisms are descendants of individuals that successfully reproduced. Respond to stimuli: survival requires adaptive responses to changes in the external environment. Organisms that respond to environmental stimuli will be favored by natural selection over those that cannot. E. g. plant adjusting size of pores (stomata) to regulate gas exchange.
