Document Summary

Lecture 2 - the tree of life: properties of life. Difference between living things is how its organized: life forms are organized unlike non living things which is a random subset of its environment. 7 properties of life: display order. The cell is the basic unit of life. Cells have internal environments that are separate and distinct from their surrounding: separation allows processes essential to life, separation allows creation of specialized internal environmental, harness & utilize energy. Maintaining processes and internal environments independent of the environment require energy ex. transport of molecules across membranes against concentration gradients: reproduce. Entities that reproduce are favoured by natural selection over those that don"t: all those organisms are descendants of individuals that successfully reproduced, respond to stimuli. Survival requires adaptive responses to changes in the external environment: organisms that respond to environmental stimuli will be favoured by natural selections over those that cannot.
