Document Summary

Weeks 5-6: chapters 8, 9, 12, 10, 11. In 1940, alfred hershey and martha chase were studying the biochemical basis of inheritance. They knew that certain bacteria-infecting viruses called bacteriophages consist of proteins and dna. Phage (bacteriophage) are simply viruses that infect bacteria. Phage were allowed to infect bacteria grown on radioactive sulphur (35s) containing bacterial medium. Sulfur is found in a couple of amino acids so it gets incorporated into proteins, but it doesn"t get incorporated into dna. Phage were allowed to infect bacteria grown on radioactive phosphorus (32p) containing bacterial medium. In this experiment, the dna is going to be labeled and not the protein. If the hereditary material is protein then the hereditary material, the phage transmits to new bacteria, will contain radioactive sulfur. If the protein is the hereditary material then it"s the 35s that going to be co-injected into the bacteria and it"s going to show up in the progeny (offspring) phase at the end.
