ENGC02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Panopticon, Zipper, Odysseus
Document Summary
Karen"s immunity as a white foreigner is stripped from her during the student protests and she is face to face with the brutality that other burmese citizens endure. Renata"s rebirth is born from detachment to activism in the caribbean politics. The same happens with karen with she becomes involved in the student rally instead of just hearing/watching it. Women are constantly warning karen about maung and that he is a bad man with a mistress & who tortured/murdered people from rival groups. Karen asks why she"s always last to know and concludes that women are last to know everything. She believes women are not shown as heroines like the men. Malaria is always brought up (this idea of illness is similar to bodily harm) Bodily harm is more of a female gothic while burmese lessons is more of a worldly gothic. Karen doesn"t stay with maung since she doesn"t want to be a nameless wife of a guerilla fighter.
