HISB30H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Amoraim, Separate Spheres
Document Summary
Patriarchy under siege: the old order, corrosive forces: overcrowding, the market revolution, evangelical religion. Redefining gender: roles: the rise of separate spheres. Keywords: companionate marriage ; free will; domesticity; public/male sphere (market, politics, amoral) private/female sphere (home, moral, mother-centered). To understand change, you have to understand how the families were before it happened: father (household head, wife, sons, daughters, servants (including apprentices, clerks), slaves. The primary goal was for the father to hand down his property/farm land to his son or sons. Great chain of being: god, man, wife, child, servant, animals. As early as the 1740s and 1750s, farm settlements in new england and the atlantic were being overcrowded: families had numerous sons, fathers needed to find a lot of land for his sons. Compassionate marriage was when men and women were getting married for love instead of having domestic agreements.
