Document Summary
Sampling is the science and practice of selecting information from populations in a manner that allows defensible inferences to be drawn from those data. Non probability sampling: non random basis for selecting sample using judgement criteria. Sampling a smaller number of respondents so that generalizations can be made about a larger population is an important tool to master for the researcher carrying out a quantitative investigation. Quota sampling is a non-probability technique commonly used in market research. Involves selecting sample elements according to a predetermined distribution across certain defined categories: form of stratified sampling but not random, cannot predict probability of being chosen. The distinctive characteristic of non-probability sampling is its nonrandom basis for selecting sample elements using judgement criteria. There is a single sampling stage with simple selection strategy. Stratification sampling: ensures a desired distribution of a sample across important groups in a population, requires certain knowledge of the population, subsection is assigned to a predefined strata.
