LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Diphthong, Tenseness, Vocal Tract
Document Summary
Lina01 lecture 3 (chapter 5) phonetics: the sounds of language. They are the most intense and most heard sounds in speech. The articulators don"t come together, which allows the vocal tract to remain quite open. This leads there to being no obstruction in the airflow which means there is no place or manner of articulation like consonants have. Voicing occurs for vowels when there is a vocal fold vibration. The shape of the oral cavity shows the quality of each vowel. The shape of the oral cavity can be changed by: raising or lowering the tongue, advancing or retracting the tongue, making the above movements with tense or relaxed movements, whether the lips are round or not. There are 4 features of a vowel: height: the height of the tongue, whether it is raised or lowered. Height can also be referred to as open vowels vs. closed vowels.
