LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Articulatory Phonetics, Vocal Tract, Tenseness
Document Summary
Phonetics: study of physical properties of speech sounds, how sounds are produced (articulatory phonetics) Place of articulation: where obstruction takes place, at the top of the ipa chart, refer to the diagrams to see where the air is obstructed. Involve complete closure but count them as affricates instead of stop: even though it look likes a combination of two symbols, it is one sound. Liquids: called liquids they flow smooth sounds, lateral, produced with air moving around the sides of the tongue, voiced alveolar lateral liquid, retroflex, curled tongue, flap/tap, tongue taps the alveolar ridge, glides, rapidly articulate, vowel-like sounds. Lina01 lecture 3: they are like consonants but like vowels, oral(stop), fricatives, articulates, nasals, liquids, glides, more obstruction/less air flow (prototypical consonants) to less obstruction/more air (more vowel-like) Voicing, place of articulation, manner of articulation: uniquely identify each consonant, every consonant is a combination of these three features.
