Document Summary
New media, work, and labour: week 4 recap, materiality vs. immateriality in new media discourse, the idea of the audience commodity, consuming new media as a form of labour. In other words, should we have the right to have all of our information wiped off of the internet once we die: new media and "free labour": Jobs demand flexibility; particularly jobs that don"t pay much: for terranova, the idea of free labour is more complicated than that of commodified audience labour. This process is usually considered the end of a particular cultural formation, or at least the end of its authentic phase. After incorporation, local cultures are picked up and distributed globally, thus contributing to cultural hybridization or cultural imperialism (depending on whom you listen to). Rather than capital incorporating from the outside the authentic fruits of the collective imagination, it seems more reasonable to think of cultural ows as originating within a eld that is always and already capitalism.
