Perception: process of interpreting messages of our senses (sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing) to provide order and meaning to the environment; because our perception is subjective, it is also inaccurate. Often, people base their actions on their interpretation of their perceptual system rather than the reality itself. You might think that you"re being underpaid, when actually you are the best paid in the department, and you are unaware of the fact; You think that you are underpaid, and realize that you are the best paid, however, in comparison to the ceo, you perceive your pay low. Factors influence perception that: perceiver: experience, needs, emotions can affect his/her perception of a target; interests, emotions, culture. When you receive a critical comment from your boss one week ahead of her decision to promote you; you will perceive this comment differently than if you were not expecting a promotion talk.
