Document Summary

Building credibility- explain your competence (modestly of course or if not yours then explain competence of your sources), be accurate, show your open-mindedness, show common ground with your audience. Providing evidence- accurate, up to date, typical- so choose from credible sources, provide a variety of evidence, use a vivid personal narrative whenever possible. Using sound reasoning- reasoning- the act of reaching conclusions on the basis of logical thinking (using logic to draw conclusions from evidence). Two popular types of reasoning- deduction: a chain of reasoning that carries you from a generalization to a specific instance (of the generalization) to a conclusion. In formal logic, this chain of reasoning is expressed in a form of argument known as syllogism- a deductive scheme consisting of a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion. Induction: reasoning from specific evidence to a general conclusion.
