Sociology March 21, 2013 Fertility  Mortality  Migration  Tied to industrialization in the west  First population explosion was in the west Starting around the time of industrial revolution, increase Second population explosion: post WWII in the “south  ­peaks in 1970’s  ­lead to predictions of 16 billion or more lots of countries out there.  Huge boom of young people Without sophisticated medicine, children will die World population, 1750­2150 (in billions, projected) Explained by: demographic transition tehroy 2 population problems ­north: aging populations  consequences: china called the yellow whore, korea war had pushed the line and north  korea had and then china pushed back united states responded  lots of young people and have them work you can taxe them so they can support the older  people but after baby boom  there gonna be more older people and now how are you gonna cover the cost? Immigration could be one of it Now government knows to put more money into it. but they didn’t want to put money  there because it wont be used right away and would have to tax more South: Malthusian scenarios Unsustainable growth  South surprise reversal  Population growth starts to decline in late 1970’s  Fertility rate drops from 6 to 4 in two decades (2.1=stable population) But: demographic momentum  Population will keep rising  Political agenda  Population on and off agenda  1960’s mormal panic ­limits to growth  ­population bomb    paul ehrilich (ecologist and sees people as mouths )vs. Julian simon =size x affluence X technology  size – effect of sheer numbers affluence­ use more technologuy­ environmentally friendly china’s one child policy  ­unintended consequences: 1990 wrote an article  looking at other countries  people were not having children female children not taken care as much and not fed. People wanted boys now change ultra sounds to determine if male and female so less killing and just have an abortion of the fetus rural china has portable  what makes Toronto be Toronto? Phsycially unique murders, cycling,  Toronto the good, Toronto the dull Urban themes  Tensions  ­city vs. co
