AST201H-­‐  Stars  and  Galaxies         Professor  Michael  Reid                                                                                                                            Lecture  Notes     Lecture  4:  Gravity  (continued)  and  Light     Gravity   • *Anything  with  mass  produces  gravity   • When  Earth  exerts  gravitational  force  on  the  Moon,  the  Moon  is  moving   parallel  to  the  surface  of  the  Earth     • Anything  that  is  orbiting  is  always  trying  to  hit  the  Earth,  but  due  to  the   speed  of  the  object,  if  it  is  at  𝑣 =  𝑣 ▯▯▯▯▯▯▯ ,  it  will  keep  the  object  orbiting  in  an   elliptical.     o To  make  an  object  orbit  in  a  circular  shape,  the  speed  of  the  object   orbiting  has  to  be  faster     o When  the  object  reaches  to  𝑽 𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒆  (the  speed  when  object  can  escape   from  its  normal  orbital  path),  it  breaks  free  of  Earth’s  gravity   § Escape  speed  doesn’t  depend  on  the  direction  in  which  the   object  is  thrown   § Bound  Object  –  bound  by  an  orbit  when   𝑣 =  𝑣 ▯▯▯▯▯▯▯                                               o Unbound  object
