Document Summary

Cytosol makes up half the volume of the cell. The main site of protein synthesis and protein degradation (main functions in the cytosol include): protein synthesis starts in the cytosol and is then transferred to their locations, intermediary metabolism = degradation and synthesis of small mlecules. Mitochondria also take up large volume because they are needed for energy production. The nucleus as well doesn"t take up much volume. Organelle = (subcellular compartment) or a large macromolecular complex, often membrane closed (doesn"t have to be) Nucleolus = where ribosomal genes are transcribed. Centrosomes: rer = ribosome coating extended network a lot of surface membrane area, ser = no ribosome coating. Free polyribosomes where protein synthesis is occurring in the cytosol. Lysosomes are darker because of the glycosylation on the proteins in the lumen and the membrane of the lysosomes. They differ in their compliment of the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum: the smooth endoplasmic reticulum: the liver > pancreatic ser.
