Document Summary

Cells must engage the extracellular space: to communicate with other cells, to acquire resources. These processes require control and dynamic changes to the plasma membrane. E. g. , polar cells: different proteins/lipids on different sides: requires different proteins to be transported to different sides. Biosynthetic-secretory and endocytic pathways change the plasma membrane. Connections among: the endoplasmic reticulum (makes proteins, the plasma membrane, the lysosome (breaks down proteins) Basic principles: polarized trafficking routes: trafficking routes have different starts and ends, sorting stations; e. g. , early endosome, tgn, retrieval mechanisms and general balance among routes not just one way. Constitutive secretory pathway: in all cells: unregulated membrane fusion of newly synthesized soluble proteins and newly synthesized plasma membrane proteins. Regulated secretory pathway: in specialized cells: requires signal such as hormone or neurotransmitter, which activates the release of secretory vesicles. Vesicles are stored until a signal triggers their docking and fusion.
