Document Summary

Bio230 lecture 7 - principles of cellular signalling. To understand normal cell biology and disease we must understand the molecular machinery that functions inside cells to control their shapes, functions, interactions and numbers. Cells have to communicate with each other. For a long time only had unicellular organisms. This delay due to time needed to evolve complex signalling systems for communication. But release and respond to chemical signals. This can coordinate different activities (motility, antibiotic production, spore formation, sexual conjugation in bacterial populations) Yeast cells signal to each other to attract each other. When run out of food source, cells signal to each other. Migrate + form multicellular structures clump into central mound of many cells. Mound transforms itself into mushroom structures so that spores can be moved. Easier to make discoveries with model organisms than with more complicated organisms like humans. Signalling pathways in model organisms similar/same signalling networks in us.
