Document Summary

Through industrialization we see more social classes starting to take shape. There was a working class but not everyone saw themselves as workers: brought about multiple definitions for what certain terms meant. Talking about the development of class consciousness: the self-awareness of a class, a social unite that shared ideas and beliefs. Proletariat: the industrial working class (definition is marxist: not all workers saw themselves this way, were somewhat dependent on their own labour to survive, unskilled/semi-skilled work. Selling their skill in order to survive. The french revolution abolished guilds which were organized by artisans: now anyone could be a skilled artisan, could no longer be regulated by the guilds. Other european states adopted this as well because of the fear of organized ideas as well as the more laissez-faire ideas. Laws against unions, strikes were created because of/working with the abolishing of guilds.
