Document Summary
Cities at this time never just a place but a symbol, a civic patriotism, very religious based, not secular. Civic patriotism, religious shrines, religious processions, churches. Ex: bologna had a whole set of shrines in diff places (many seem to be along outer wall) > these stories always multiply, start off small & grow. Patriotism about the whole city, cities are also divided politically & these are the areas ppl feel more loyal to. > cohesion & division in these cities no clear economic geographic division (rich & poor areas, industrial & residential) Ppl of diff classes and incomes living together. Wealthy ppl live in diff neighbourhood to make connections w/ the ppl to build political support, in hopes ruling the city as a whole, have to start small & work way up. > many ways wealthy ppl can connect w/ other ppl is ritual geography (political too) > town hall, main church, place of justice, notary etc.
