Document Summary

Antibodies block the entry of pathogens into other cells, they can tag the pathogen for destruction, antibodies are found in the blood. Mhc (major histocompatibility complex) are the antigen presenting molecules, mhc protein presents peptides to t cell (b cell sees surface and t cell sees peptide) T cells provide cytokines to help b cells: cd4 is the helper t cell, cd8 is the killer t cell, cd4+ recognizes mhc class ii pathogens. Process: antigen binds to bcr and then phagocytosed by a b cell so that peptides can be presented to the t helper cells by mhc, cd40ligand blocks antibodies. B cell differentiates into either a plasma cell or a memory b cell. Effector functions: neutralization, activation of complement, opsonization, nk cell kills target cell, degranulation of mast cells, all of this depends on antibody class. Antibody classes or isotopes: antibody class determines constant region structure which controls function. In secondary antibody response: igg, iga, and ige become dominant.
