Nubia is the country south of egypt (modern day sudan) Red land was desert (eastern and western) Black land was land that you could cultivate and grow food on. Ancient egyptians called the land around the nile kemet (black) Nile flows south to north (flowing up) White nile starts in lake victoria (uganda), goes north to khartoum, the capitol of modern day sudan. Blue nile starts in lake tana in ethiopia. White and blue niles meet in khartoum. Nile flows north from khartoum to the mediterranean. Upper egypt is south, lower egypt is north (because of river flow) August/ early september is when nile levels are at their highest. Houses are not built right by the nile, crops are planted in a narrow strip beside it and then houses after that. When nile floods, it brings silt onto the land which is good for crops.
