Egypt is the gift of the river (nile) Ancient egyptians called egypt kemet (the black land) Nile flows south to north because of how the land tilts. White nile: starts in lake victoria (modern uganda) to khartoum (sudan) Blue nile (east of white): starts in lake tana (ethiopia) The white and blue nile converge at khartoum. Upper egypt is in the south, and lower egypt is in the north. When height is reached, nile covers black land. So, when it lowers again, the nutrient-rich silt is left at the edge = good crops etc. If the flood is too small, you get less land being fertilized = smaller crops = less food = death. If flood is too big, villages get wiped out, growing season is shorter = bad. Nilometers at elephantine = notches to track the nile.
