Document Summary

Why do we assume we have free will: something we know, reasonable to assume. Why do we assume determinism: we believe every event has a cause. The contrary is not unthinkable -a universe where certain events don"t have clear causes. Psychology can predict that we will scream but not how loud, to a certain extent we might think we are deterministic but it is unclear. Metaphysical determinism (all aspects of future determined, independent if we will ever figure it out) vs. epistemic determinism (knowledge) [limits of human knowledge, other in state of the universe] Apparent conflict b/w determinism and free will (assumes metaphysical determinism) Bad resolution 1: determinism has limits: the limit is set by the fact of human freedom , holbach: human vanity, we just think we are special. Determinism has limits-----free action: not random---caused---not free, random not free. Ayer thinks this is a bad move.
