Document Summary
All human thoughts are formulated by causal mechanisms: these mechanisms could range from reasons to emotions. The discipline of psychology seeks to understand these causal mechanisms. Victor frankl: between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom. Psychology is deterministic: this discipline falls within a nexus which articulates the free-will vs determinism" conundrum. Example question: why are you here? (why does one take psy100?: answers include genuine interest in the discipline/ eld, means to other ends, improving one"s understanding of humanity. The scenario is a case of extrinsic reasoning vs. intrinsic reasoning: extrinsic motivations concerns material and/or external rationales, such as rewards, resources, titles and punishments, intrinsic motivations concerns personal rationales, such as ful llment and fascination. However, some reasons such as discipline could fall into either camp.
